Good news is coming for many Nigerians who want to learn a skill and start working. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is ready to begin a special loan for vocational and skills training. This will start in Enugu State between late June and mid-July 2024.
This new plan is different from student loans. It is for people who want to learn practical skills like tailoring, carpentry, technical work, or other trades — not just go to university.
Why Enugu First?
NELFUND visited Enugu recently and saw that the state already has strong training centres. They toured the Garments and Fashion Hub, technical colleges, and other skill centres. NELFUND said Enugu is ready and has everything needed to begin.
They also said Enugu may not be the only state to start this, but it will be one of the first.
What Will You Get?
When the programme begins, people will be able to apply online. The loan is designed to help in many ways:
- It will pay your training fees
- You will get monthly upkeep money (stipend)
- After the training, you will receive free working tools
- You don’t need to pay interest
If you live in Enugu and apply, NELFUND will show you the centre where you’ll train. They will cover all training-related costs, including transport. The loan will be easy to access and will support you until you complete your skill training.
What Kind of Skills?
This loan is not just for school students. It is for people who want to learn:
- Fashion designing
- Technical and vocational trades
- Any other practical skills taught in certified centres
Enugu Government is Ready
During NELFUND’s visit, Enugu State showed off their well-equipped centres. Mr. Arinze Chilo-Offiah from the state government said they have:
- 150+ industrial sewing machines
- Modern monogramming machines
- Spaces that can train up to 500 people at once
He confirmed that Enugu wants to fully join the NELFUND skills training plan and help the youth get better opportunities.
Application Process
NELFUND will soon open an online portal. You will:
- Apply online
- Choose your training location
- Get loan support for the full training
The team is still working on the final details, but everything is moving fast. Once the portal is open, many people across the country will be able to apply.
